VANGELIS El Greco (Original Soundtrack)

In 2007, another surprise came from Vangelis.  Most fans knew that he had completed the score to the latest Iannis Smaragdis film, El Greco (Vangelis worked with him previously on the film Kavafis).  What we were not expecting was for the score to be released.  But indeed, Universal Greece came through with a release (in Greece only at the time of this writing).  And what an interesting release it is! First of all, do not confuse this CD with Vangelis' previous 1995 and 1998 releases, also titled El Greco!  This is all new music.  More interesting to me is the fact that it appears that most of the cues from the film are on this release and there is no music on the CD that is not heard in the film.  This in not how Vangelis usually releases his scores, but it works very well on this CD.  The score utilizes choir and individual vocal performances by Psarantonis and Loudovicos Ton Anogion.  The score is divided into 18 parts.  Now we have to wait for the DVD release to see this film! The theatrical presentation has not happened outside Greece...yet.  There are plans for a release in Spain, and I am sure we will see a DVD out this year.  The film was a huge success in Greece, and the CD is also selling very well!
