Beaubourg UK LP reissue front coverBeaubourg would be the last of the RCA era albums. Released in 1978, it quietly disappeared, as RCA probably did not know what to make of it. There has been speculation that Vangelis just made an album of noise to finish off his final album under his contract. However, this is disputed in an interview he completed in 1981. As follows:

(Interviewer): What did you have in mind with the album "Beaubourg" (1978)? Without doubt, it is your most experimental record. Was this just a gag - to do music like this once and only once - and are there connections between this unusual record and you changing record companies after the LP?

Vangelis: No, this isn't a gag. I do this kind of music a lot when I am in the studio. But you know, it isn't really the sort of music for the market. Therefore I was very lucky to have this contract with RCA so that they had to publish this music as well as other stuff. But this had nothing to do with the end of my contract with RCA. I love this album! I waited patiently for a CD release, and one came in early 1990. But it was mastered improperly, with master tape drag noticible on both parts. Ugg. RCA Japan released a CD and all was well, although all the RCA CDs need a good remastering (too much hiss). Beaubourg and L'apocalypse des Animaux were the two 70s albums without any single releases. It would have been difficult to market a single from this album I guess, although RCA did make an excerpt for The Best of Vangelis.
