Can it possibly have been 8 years since the last new, full-length composition was released? Without a doubt, I can say it was worth the wait. Vangelis has completed the score to the Oliver Stone film Alexander. I am so happy that Sony Classical released the score before the movie, at least in some territories like the USA. 18 tracks worth of new material! I am nearly speechless. I will say this much...Vangelis still loves percussion instruments! When I first heard "Bagoas' Dance", I remembered just how much Vangelis had previously focused on his beloved percussion! But it has been a while since he composed a track (that has been released, anyways) that has percussion as the primary focus! Biased as usual, I know, but this new release was, for me, worth waiting for. The score is worthy of the Oscar, but sadly, it has not been nominated, in part (IMHO) due to the film not doing well at the box office in the US. It is really a shame, because Vangelis worked on this score for a year. [Thanks to Walter Wachhauer for the scan of the US Borders promo CD].
