The Greek Bing Crosby! Of course, Tassos is known as one of the main vocalists in The Forminx. This section looks only at one particular track that Tassos did with Vangelis separate from The Forminx. In 1986, Nico Mastorakis (principle lyricist for The Forminx and a slew of other Greek bands from the 60s) released a various artists compilation entitled "STO RUQMO TOU '60 No. 3". On this LP, there is one track by Tassos and Vangelis, a cover version of "Strangers In the Night" (yes, the Bert Kaemphert-penned tune!). Of course, the track sounds very much like The Forminx, with Vangelis' moody organ work a highlight. Now, a warning for my fellow Vangelis collectors. If you are offered a chance to buy the 7" single from Greece, on the Pan Vox label PAN 6058, DON'T BUY IT!!!! I found out (the expensive way) that Tassos recorded another version of this song WITHOUT Vangelis! Who knew? Update 11/24/01 - Now we learn that Mr. Papastamatis also left Greece to try and make a name for himself in the world, starting with France! I have found a "new" single by him (he has dropped his last name and the "s" at the end of his name, now known as "Tasso") that includes a song written with Vangelis (perhaps 1969)! I wonder if Tasso sought Vangelis out after Aphrodite's Child had become successful? Sad to say, Tasso did not have much success in launching a career in France.
