Hollywood could not have made this film. The film has some depressing moments. I remember the first time I watched it with my wife. Some of the dogs suffer and die in the film, and during the first scene that this occurred, I looked over at my wife and she was crying! We can watch a standard Hollywood film with a high body count and not blink an eyelid, yet when a dog dies, tears flow. The longest commercial version of this film is the Japanese cut (145 minutes), but it is in Japanese only, with no subtitles. The Japanese editions exist on videocassette, laserdisc and DVD. There is a shorter cut that is supposed to exist with subtitles, but I have yet to find it (do you have it to sell to me?). Then there is the short version (112 minutes) that is dubbed...yuck. Of course, this is the USA and Australian versions. There are also French and Italian issues. The Italian issue is a must-have for collectors, as there are a couple of cues that are totally unique to this edition, even compared to the Japanese edition (and even compared to the longer version shown on Japanese TV).
