666 West Germany CD booklet front coverForget pop, prog rules. While I really like the pop side of Aphrodite's Child, it was 666 that will always be most associated with the group, for several reasons. First, the controversial nature of the album. Vangelis reports that Mercury panicked when he delivered his first cut (a 4 album version!), and they refused to release it, especially due to the cut "¥" with Irene Papas' wonderful vocals. So it was shelved for nearly two years (from 1970 to 1972). By the time it was released, Aphrodite's Child was finished as a band. Vangelis did not like the pressure to produce pop records and he hated touring, whereas Demis and Lukas were more inclined to that direction. Indeed, they both went off on solo careers during the time that 666 sat on the shelf. I often wondered why Mercury decided to release the album. They sent it to their progressive label, Vertigo, and bid farwell to Aphrodite's Child, although Vangelis did record one more album for Vertigo, his solo album Earth in 1973. As it stands, this 2 disc release is one of the first concept albums, and is regarded as a progressive rock classic. On top of that, Vangelis collectors have to compete with the Vertigo label collectors to buy these records, especially the first white Vertigo swirl label inner label issues. [Thanks to Roland Weißflog for the information on the French LP cover variation, the scan of the German white label promo and the scan of the 1st Japanese issue and 1st Japanese issue white label promo, to Franco Lo Schiavo for the scan of the 2nd Dutch "Break" 7" and to Augusto Croce for the scan of the 1st issue Italian LP].
